Unfortunately, I think this is always going to be an issue. I think it's silly to think people don't know how to tip, that's very unlikely. I think what it boils down to a couple different things. One being, people are cheap and will look for reasons to skimp on tips. Some people will never be happy with the service they receive and look for excuses to complain to the manager or get free meals. I see this all the time in the restaurant I work part time in.

I think another reason why people don't tip well is because they don't think serving is very difficult. If you've never worked in this industry, you may not fully appreciate all the work it takes to wait on multiple tables at a time. Even servers who have been working in the industry for 20 years fall behind or forget things. Give people a break!

Another theory of mine is that people who have never served or worked in the service industry have an attitude towards servers. As if because they are serving you, they must not be smart enough to get a better paying job, and you want to prove your point by tipping poorly....I don't know, just a thought!

1st off i heard that you are supposed to only tip on the total BEFORE tax. Not sure if this is true but in a state like CA it can make a big diffference since the tax is 8.5%!

But I have to agree with one of the 1st posters that - some servers SUCK but expect a 20% tip. No hello or I'll be with you in a minute.. but seated at a table for 5-10 mins with no eye contact & noone saying "just a minute". Then when the server does come they act annoyed if you take more than 2 seconds to make up your mind or they say they'll be right back .. just to sit there for another 10 minutes, totally ignored.
I dine out enough & been to good, bad & ugly restaurants so know good service when I get it. I've left a 30% tip at Denny for breakfast if the server is nice & 15% (usually the lowest I'll leave even if the service is total ****) at an upscale place when the waiter was completely rude & asked like if you weren't a celeb then you weren't worth his time!!

So I think there is a lot of odd information out there & also if you come from a cheap family where Dad only tipped 10% no matter what, then possilby they are crappy tippers too.

I am a server at Chilis and I come home with next to nothing sometimes. Its ok though, because this job is to keep me from being bored -my fiance makes enough with the railroad. But it would be nice to make some extra, so ALL my money isn't going just to gas. It's true, minorities tip pretty bad most of the time, but there are sooo many older white folks who don't realize that $3 doesn't help an individual in this day and age. I would give anything to tell everyone in the world about all this.

Many people do not practice good manners of tipping their wait staff. Those who do not leave a tip have never had to work as wait staff, so they don't completely comprehend how physically challenging this job is...not to mention the rude people you must encounter. They also do not realize that the tips are considered part of their pay so their base rate is lower than minimum wage. Some people are just ignorant. I personally appreciate how hard they work and I even give them a tip when I do curbside service or am taking my food to go (when tips are acceptable practice). My tipping is based at about 15-20%.

It is sad to say but I go out with friends and relatives and they have more money than me and are they ever CHEAP. And do they ever complain about everything it seems. A few friends are good. I always end up leaving more money behind after everybody else leaves. Most servers it seems are young girls struggling through high school or a new marriage or college - and people DON'T CARE. If you're a good server and deal with rude people, I understand, I eat with them as relatives and companions sitting next to me....

Because they just don't care & they are just ignorant of the fact that a tip should be considered as part of the price of the meal. It's one thing if the service was bad,but it's another if it is not. So....anyone that's reading this PLEASEget that waitresses have to pay taxes on the amount of their daily sales1 Please,if you don't tip, or tip less than 15%to 20% ,start diong it now!Consider it part of the meal .!

If the service is bad then the tip is bad in most cases. Too many servers are now automatically expecting a tip so they refuse to provide the best service possible. If they would improve in the service department then the tip would be better

the problem is not that many people don't tip but the fact that many waiters/waitresses expect that they deserve to be given a good tip no matter what kind of service they give their customer..i have been a waiter for so many years and i tried my very best to give people the best service that i can give them no matter what, if they don't give me a good tip then i just accept it a part of the job but still i don't change my way of working no matter what sometimes i do have a repeat customers who did not give me tip the last time they were on my station and i just do my job as good as it is and in fact i try to be even better and consider it as a challenged if i can get a good tip this time around and sometimes i do and sometimes i don't but i just considered it as part of the job. waiting tables is really very stressfull and there are just some people who are made up for it and some who are just doing it temporarily until they found a better job or somewhat but if you are into this kind of work or any other kind of job the best approach is just do the best you can and leave it as it be and just don't expect that all customer is oblige to give you tips, if they don't it's okay and if the do then thank you!!!

That is true and not only that severs don't make minim wadge. People are cheap. Not all people but let me tell you a lot of people don't believe in tipping. I deliver pizza and nothing makes me madder then people like that. Yesterday I delivered in a really bad snow storm and I got so many people that did not tip. It also depends on the area. I would like to think Wyoming people would do better, I never had this problem in Kansas.

I recall a waiter chasing a customer out into the parking lot and demanding a tip. He was a little embarrassed when the customer informed him that he had given the waiter a good tip that he listed on the credit card receipt.
