A girl I know who is Christian likes to point out "miraculous" things like science doesn't know how cats purr and that with as much as we know about biology, that initial spark when the sperm enters the egg that causes life to start is completely unknown and unknowable by science.

Well I looked around and found the cat purring answer for the most part, but I am curious as to the answer of what exactly happens to "spark" life.

She also says that when you die there's a surge in electical activity right before death and she says it's the soul leaving but science can't figure that out either. Any info on that would be appreciated as well.

Links also welcome.

> "that initial spark when the sperm enters the egg that causes life to start is completely unknown and unknowable by science"
not true - there are a number of biochemical reactions that occur when a sperm encounters and fertilises the egg:

To be sure, we don't know it *all* (fertility science is a growing, and well-studied discipline), but we're getting there.

When you die, you also void your bowels. I don't think that has anything to do with the soul leaving...
If there was a consistent surge in electrical activity (presumably in the brain?) on death, then that would be a convenient method for diagnosing death, and stopping any ongoing CPR-type ressuccitation. Since actually diagnosing death (even brain-death) can be remarkably difficult:

I don't see this "surge" as being anything consistent or significant.

Science doesn't know it all and especially they do not know what "sparks" life. How the meeting of the sperm and egg sparks life, but God says "Life is in the blood." God does not say life is in the blood type, God says life is in the blood. So evidently God put life in the first man and it comes down.

Umm well it depends. When the sperm first eneters the egg the like a reactions which causes rapid multiplication which eventually form a blastocyst .... But umm i think if you were religious u would believe that like god sparks life but i dunno. U can find out all that egg and sperm stuff on wiki so just ckeck it out i guess

What sparks life? Watching the sunset/sunrise is good enough for me =) I know it doesn't "spark" life but it is beautiful.

here's a link to some stuff about souls:
