Hi, I am very early stages in pregnacy, 5 and a half weeks. This is my first so I dont know what I am doing. I am going to be out over Christmas quite a lot and I dont know what to avoid and what to eat. I went out yesterday and ordered Salmon thinking it was a safe bet and when it came it had a sauce on it that I am sure was hollendaise based therefore with raw eggs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You don't need any tests, yes avoid raw eggs, raw/undercooked meats, unpasturised dairy, stuff like pate & blue vein cheeses. There's lots of websites that can give you lists of what you shouldn't eat but really it's common sense, Try http://www.babycenter.com.au/pregnancy/nutrition/diethealthypregnancy/#6

don't worry about the sauce. It was only once and is unlikely to cause some major problems.

The things you should avoid are....
* any 'soft' cheeses like Brie, Camembert, Blue Vein...
* pate's
* deli foods like,...open salads, cold meats and chicken
* hot BBQ chickens left in a warmer
* fish high in mercury content, but having one piece of fish is still fine. Just don't eat shark 3 times a week (basically stay away from fish that eat other fish as the mercury content can be higher, like shark, swordfish etc...)
* anything that looks ill prepared or dodgy
* raw eggs as they are or in sauces

Just exercise caution and don't over-indulge. Usually past 12weeks when most of the baby is full-formed already the likely hood of a disease causing major problems is over so you can enjoy one or two 'off-limits' foods.

try this website, I think its fantastic for reliable information

if ur going out to eat just ask them what comes with the meal e.g. sauces etc. if it is something dodgy then ask them not to give you any sauce on it

you should ask a doctor on what and what not to eat
cause you might have reactions to whatever you eat
and you need to take a test to assure that whatever your eating is good for you and your baby
