and that it was all just a political stunt to divert attention away from the mass murder committed by sudan in darfur?

Sadly, i don't think we can have such high hopes.
The only reason Gillian Gibbons was released, i think, is from fear of a backlash that would cut aid to Sudan.
They obviously under-estimated the gumption & outrage of the English to protect their own.

Their government have realised what a stupid mistake they have made and how ridiculous their country now looks in front of the whole world. They are pathetic - all of this could have been stopped with the first police officer having a quiet word with the school teacher - and where was the useless school head? Also the thought that they will be cut off from millions of pounds of our British taxpayers money being sent to support them must have been the final straw. We should stop giving them and any other repressive regime anything straight away until they learn how to be a part of a civilised world.

The far more interesting question should be asked OF Gillian Gibbons. Why go and work in a country where Islamic fundamentalists of the most unstable kind are in charge?

It happens all the time - UK citizens go to countries run by lunatics and then we end up using vast amounts of resources to get them out of trouble.

If you don't want a load of Islamic vitriol heaped on you, leave them to run their own countries and educate their children.

Worthy as the cause of trying to help is, these places are beyond our help. We heap cash on them - Sudan gets vast amounts in aid - yet the people live in abject poverty. The politicians, on the other hand - have you seen them? - live and work in western-type comfort.

Sudan and Islamists will never admit they are wrong - they see the fundamentalist cause as the only route to take and will punish and/or kill all who oppose them.

It was all political. The teddy was just a diversion away from the real agenda.
Are there still teachers out there from the U.K. - will they be recalled, and if not why not? could they be subject to a similar ruling if they transgress the religion at a particular given time.
Why do you think those teachers would still stay in Sudan?

Common sense has prevailed, she should have never been jailed in the first place, and like you so rightly said it was a political stunt that has backed-fired.
They knew if they were to keep Gillian in prison they would face a monetary back-lash off Hughes proportions.

Yes Gillian knew it was wrong however it was the children that named the teddy bear not Gillian herself.

Well they see that their plan of action to give financial aid and encourage the Chad group that declared war on the French troops and other members of the EU force that was supposed to be in Chad to protect the refugees has gone virtually unnoticed by anyone

Muslims, rightly or wrongly, dislike the west due to its arrogance and bombing of the middle east.

They had the world's spolight on them, and as a show of defiance, they made an eample of her. The grossly mistreated her, and couldn't see beyond the end of theri noses in the damage this would casue them in the longrun. Some nutters were whipped up into a frenzy who hate the west even more and wanted her to pay a huge penalty without even caring about the details. This was pointed out to them by our officials who explained how much less support they would get in the future and they saw sense.

Of course it was a political stunt. It is an archaic and inhumane country. Why we pander to countries like this is beyond me.

I think they might just have realised in time, that there was a grave danger of losing that huge sum of money we pay them each year. It would be good if we decided to cut their aid drastically to punish them for their gross stupidity. Maybe that money could be put to better use to solve some of our own problems?
