Well I would assume the reason why many people would grant credence to the possibility of extraterrestrial life, and not believe in Santa Claus, is because Santa Claus is an established myth, whose history we are well aware of. Secondly, Santa Claus, being a human, does things that are logically impossible, and therefore we can discount these stories as having prima facie implausibility. The existence of aliens, on the other hand, cannot be easily dismissed, because in order for us to do that we would have to claim a certain level of omniscience. We would have to assert that we have complete and total knowledge of the universe, thus justifying our denial of the existence of aliens. We simply don’t have access to that kind of information.
There are just some facts about our planet, and the way things work that makes Santa Claus an obvious myth. For example, not all good boys and girls get toys. This is especially true among those families who are destitute, or those families who don’t celebrate Christmas. Yet, if Santa Claus existed this would not be the case. These facts disconfirm the existence of Santa Claus. Yet, conversely, nothing about our world, or our universe, would necessarily contradict the possibility of aliens, or their ability to visit us. After all, if we can learn to travel to the moon, and we can acquire the means to send probes into the deepest recesses of our solar system, all in just a mere 50 to 80 years after we discovered flight, it stands to reason that life forms in another part of our galaxy, who have existed longer than we have, could also have developed the means to travel even longer distances and reach us.
I am not in any way saying that I believe in aliens and UFOs. I am a bit of agnostic on the subject, in that I don’t believe there is much evidence to confirm it, but I don’t deny that there is a distinct possibility that extraterrestrial life may exist, and they may have been exposed to our planet. I am open to any possibility being even remotely probable, as long as there are not known facts that contradict it. This is a basic principle of all understanding and all knowledge.
I think it is good that you brought up the issue of skepticism as to how it relates to these two subject matters. One of the essential steps to deciphering truth, and making our pursuit of it efficient, is to be able to discern which ideas we can dismiss outright, and which ideas we must pursue further.

By the way, thank you for dedicating your main profile page on Yahoo Answers to me. It is probably the greatest form of flatter I have received, and I much appreciate it.

first of all: what pops into your head when i say...SANTA! i already know what image you saw. a white, benevolent, fat, old man wearing a red suit with white fur lining.
did you know that this is not santa, at least not until recently.
he used to wear green. but, about twenty years ago, a certain company called coca cola decided to make his image stand out and plastered the image of santa-a-la-rouge everywhere. over time we just thought that santa always wore red.
second of all: are we alone in the universe? i think we're the only sentient life for the next hundred or so light-years but the thought of being completely alone in the universe is not a pleasant one. what would be the good of being the only living, talking and walking creatures ever, anywhere, in the galaxy? and if not then the possibility that evolution has forced an extra terrestrial to develop a funny shaped nogin is pretty likely, so is the fact that they would have something a bit more superior to fly around in rather than our fuel munching shuttle-things.
and the fact that theyre green...is because green is a mysterious looking colour.
and besides: whats more believable? a fat oldy riding around on a sled with flying reindeers (one with a glowing radioactive schnozz) or aliens in technologically advanced, aerodynamic transport?
why do they come to earth anyways...the wheat isnt even good. neither are the cows...so why do they keep taking those things? do they use wheat as a currencey...and cows as gods?...that would be awesome.

Because Santa Clause is fake. One origin of Santa Clause is a 4th century Christian name St. Nicholas. He wore red, had a beard, and gave gifts to the poor. From there on I guess the tradition was carried on.

Same reason we think anything is fake - no evidence, illogical, logistically impossible, etc.
