Why are they so pompous?

Yes, I am in strong agreement. All top contributors should be deported to the Seychelles, Bahamas or St Lucia.

This might look enviable or ‘pompous’ to some but the actual fact of being at the top is somewhat a different experience, as it is an added responsibility upon the shoulders of the ones who bear it. Without any distinction of any sort one is carefree, without being a leading runner one is free to go according to his or her own trot, but once you realise that you are somewhat distinctive among the rest or that you are in a leading role where there are many enthusiastic competitors about, it is almost impossible not to be competitive, not to pay some or a great deal of your attention towards maintaining your position. It is instinctively ingrained in the mind, and it affects the way you think. But if you are a free thinker bearing an independent mind to all possibilities who would like to be fairest, uncompetitive and purest to the best then hierarchical positions are not for you. In that case you better maintain your regular course, but I am not sure what you should do if somehow ‘greatness is thrust upon you’, as it could happen just because of you being preset at certain place.

Besides, the people at the top, as ‘top contributors’ here, once there do not stay there forever. This then is no matter of a lasting pomp and ceremony. This is not a situation that one might like to rest his or her laurel upon and find a reason to change their demeanour for good. It is a privilege nevertheless but only won by the reason of your own efforts that you made to contribute your valued opinions. I have seen people wining and losing their badge over and over again, which must be tough on some. The solution therefore is to have your spirit high most of the time and participate. Do aspire to be at the top, for your own good self and for the rest of us, and once there, try to stay there as long as you can, but please even when you are not, carry on just the way you have always been, your best.

You are right in a way..... I remember the day when I got this tag for the first time..... It gives a big push up to the ego.... one suddenly starts believing one is really special... as though one has become so special just by getting that tag.... in that state of mind, it is very likely for someone to underestimate or even undermine another person here and arrogantly assume supremacy over others........ this is harmful, because one must remember that the tag came in the first place only because one did give due respect to every question and questioner, without which one can hardly ever get chosen as the Best answerer by so many questioners for so many questions. I genuinely believe that humility is the best and strongest ladder to climb and more importantly, it is necessary to remain up there... if one loses humility, one becomes incapable as well as undeserving to stay at the top.

Pompous? I don't really know about that! But here's my answer anyway:

Because they've answered a lot of questions for people... And their answers often get chosen as the best?

No man, even if they are so pompous, we need people of all sorts in this world don't we?

Friend,

May I ask why? What have they done?

we need all sort of people here to share the knowledge. The flow of knowledge is both ways.So both are benefited if the question and answer both are good.

I too lost my tag.It does not matter .I do not know why it came and why it went away.I am the same as I was.

From what is termed a 'normal' lifestyle they have deported themselves already through spending so much time here. So where can we deport them TO? Reality perhaps? Okay, we're back at that .............

It appears to me that Top Contributor's badges are handed out for the quantity of answers in a particular subject .
Don't you think it would be fairer if they were handed out for the quality of the answers?
