I think more often than not they just vote against whatever is the opposite of their viewpoint whether it is a good answer or not especially on sports teams, city pride, etc... questions. Coincidentally, these people that are idiotic enough to do this are often just just a little bit "special" as well.
I only give thumbs downs if the answer was just plain dumb & something anybody should've known better than to say, poorly constructed, off topic, or a just all around stupid harassing statement that leant no merit to the question.

I think I prefer a thumbs down to nothing at all, especially when other people get thumbs something...but it would be nice to know who the thumbs down whores are.
