As someone else above already indicated, any violation of the law is an infraction; theft of something under $50 would be a misdemeanor but by no means "petty" on the effect a guilty plea or conviction could have on your ability to get a job for the next 7 years as it will show up in a background search and the majority of employers will not want to hire anyone that has a conviction involving moral turpitude, especially it you are willing to risk for such a small amount.

All crimes are considered infractions of the "law." Because of the relatively minor amount of money stolen this is classified as a misdemeanor.

If the value of the item stolen exceeds $1,000 it becomes a felony.

If felony theft by swindle it is grand larceny.
If a car is stolen it is grand theft, auto.

could be a misdemeanor depending on how the item was stolen ,like if was taken from a robbery or juss shoplifted, for what reasons it was taken,
it all is taken into consideration.
a 12 year old stealin a couple chocolate bars would probly get a infraction,a 20 year old stealin probably would get the misdemeanor.

Well, if you stole something worth $49 dollars in 1930, it would have been considered a serious crime. But today it's not as serious. If the dollar become worthless due to a worldwide depression next year, $49 might be equal to half a cent in buying power at that time.
