Because they are uneducated and don't know any better. Or they just don't care. Smoking while pregnant is disgusting as well.

Well my sister in law drank, though not heavily through both her pregnancies and thought I was strange not touching a drop at all while pregnant or breastfeeding. But this was a few years ago when research said it was ok to have a couple of glasses of wine a week and so forth. But now with all the research done into fetal alcohol syndrome, I think if you can't not have a drink for 9m then you are a little selfish (unless you didn't know you were pregnant and didn't have a drink after you found out). It wont kill you to not drink, but it can kill a fetus if you do!!! think about that.

I agree with Cindy on this one.

Everyone that thinks drinking mothers are stupid obviously have some pre existing problem with alcohol. Go get that sorted out.
It makes me really angry that people judge pregnant women like that.
It is safe to have 1 drink a night whilst pregnant. It is not safe, however to drink excessively. Nor is it safe when you're not pregnant.
I don't think i ever got drunk while i was pregnant, but yes, i did enjoy a drink here and there.
Call me immature or irresponsible or selfish, but You'd be wrong. I gave birth with a happy healthy baby, who does not have a learning disorder, and is probably smarter than half the people on here answering stupid questions like this.

becuz there are no studies that can actually link drinking to any serious disorders. smoking cigarettes is just as bad if not worse but its legal. also they say the only thing they can prove is if you drink more than 5 drinks a day your child might have some learning problems. i'm not saying go out and get wasted i'm just saying thats what i've read in a yahoo news ad.

I wish I could give an answer to this. Of course it's everyones own choice on what they do, and when my mother had me nearly 20 years ago she smoked and drank throughout her pregnancy which never did me any harm but could of done all the same. Some people who drink are just not educated on the facts of what alcohol can do to their unborn baby, some people just don't think it can happen to them.

i wouldn't call myself a 'drinker' as I would struggle to have one drink a month at best(not pregnant), but on saturday after we helped my mother-in-law move to her new house, my SIL announced her engagment and we announced our pregnancy, I indulged in a celebratory glass of champayne with the family!

there is nothing wrong with one drink every now and then when you are pregnant. And by one I mean ONE drink. Drinking (plural) is totally different and not okay. I don't condone drinking regularly or heavily in pregnancy but a glass here and there to celebrate or unwind at dinner is proven to have no ill effects to the baby. My doctor has said its fine and thats good enough for me.

Because there irresponsible idiots that don't care. Or they have a severe drink problem but even at that they shouldn't be selfish and get pregnant in the first place

Some say its ok some say its not.
I dont think its worth the risk.... I work with kids who have foetal alcohol syndrome and its NOT pretty. .

People would have to stupid and ignorant not to know the risks though. Its all over the news about foetal alcohol syndrome...

I think pregnant women who drink a lot choose to ignore the facts to serve their own needs. .

Because they are irresponsible. Unfortunately, most of these women will be irresponsible for the duration of motherhood. Some won't though, some will see the face of their newborn child and realize that they have to protect and nurture their child so it will have a shot in the world.

Some mothers are so scared of the delivery that they drink to keep the baby small. Unbelievable but true!

Actually, it's the uneduacted of you that think this way.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO PROOF that the odd drink does any damage at all.

I am 11 weeks and I drink about 2-3 glasses of wine a week.
When I lived in france all mothers to be drank in moderation (more than I am) and they have no more problems than people who abstain completely.

I am struggling to give up smoking so I will have a puff on my husbands ciggy about twice a week.

Call me what you want as rant as much as you want but you are the uneducated.
If you actually read up on this subject. and look at the scientific studies you'll see that telling women to abstain completely is nothing but scaremongering.

The only stupid, uneducated people are those of you who believe what you're told without even looking into it for yourself.
Like lambs to the slaughter........
