The sensible people have given good answers here.
What you won't be prepared for, or will find harder to be prepared for, are the myriad small ways in which a baby will change your life. Simple things, like being able to go to the cinema when you want, being able to drop in on your best friend for an evening, that sort of thing. It's not that you won't be able to do these things, rather, you'll have to plan for them so that you can have the baby looked after, or taken with you. We were well prepared for all the big (and obvious) things -- it was the seemingly insignificant things that took us so much and so often by surprise.
But the plusses, and the sheer great fun, of having a baby outweighed all these other things.

you dont actually need that much in the first while, a crib with plenty of light blankets, nappies and other toiletries, plain clothing, cause nothing fits new born babies properly so all of those newborn outfits are better after a few weeks. you wont need a buggy or pram right away, you can get away with a sling for a while. steralising equipment is also a must. other than that as soon as baby is born get the wee gem into a sleep routine so that you can catch some at the same time, that way life will be much easier in the long run too, you will only loose sleep for the first few months rather that the first few years.

Some realy helpful people here today!!!!!!!!!!!! lol
Anyways dont get too stressed about preparing for a baby! It all seems to come natural! You can obviously go to childbirth classes for that part, but other than that just get plenty of rest and relaxation as you wont get any when your baby arrives!
Other than buying all the bits and pieces you need just sit back and wait and ENJOY it!!!!

If you mean what to pack in your hospital bag to take in for the birth:
personal washing kit, maternity pads, breast pads, underwear, several nightdresses, slippers, bottle of squash concentrate. Large bath towel. For baby you will need nappies, cotton wool and babygroes - check with your midwife for other specialist stuff you may need.
If you mean how to prepare yourself before pregnant:
good balanced diet including plenty of green vegs. for folic acid, if you smoke - stop, if you drink - moderate and stop once pregnant.
Other than that, think very, very carefully about having a child, it will change your life utterly, do not be persuaded otherwise, you will be creating a new life not a toy or fashion statement.

one thing some people forgot was a good car seat. get it in staled in you car before you go into Labor and know how to work it.
I did forget about learning how to work it and when it was time to go home with my first child The Hospital would not let my Baby leave with me to I could show a nurse how to take my child in and out of the car in the car set properly as to not cash harem to my new baby.
