I think it's because they lack compassion for other humans. It's a terribly sad thing to witness or be the person targeted by such ignorant people.
Anyone with any common sense knows to treat others as you would want to be treated.
Prejudice and racism are just other words for hatred.

I think its a mixture of things , how you were raised, experiences... but I also think people on TV do alot of raciest promoting, especially black comedians (yes they are funny) however I think they promote the idea that people are different more than bringing us together. At least that's how I feel as a white male.
I also work with many black people in my office, some VERY hard workers, which I enjoy working with. But its the few that make opposite races look bad. I also work with 2 thug lazy wannabes and I end up pulling their weight at work... There constantly late... they take a break every 15 min, and they present the mindset that "I don't give a ****" I don't consider myself a raciest but I must confess I have these feelings when working with these people.
It's the same for white trash too though. I'm embarrassed I'm white every time I watch a trailer trash Jerry Springer. Or some ignorant redneck KKK member..
Please don't take offense just being honest.

Personally, I don't really find it logical enough to understand. I come from a very racist German family, and ironically my first wife was black, my second wife was middle eastern and my current wife is a Jew. With my first wife and the son her and I had together, my father and his side of the family completely disowned me and disowned my child. Fair? No.
My best mates since childhood were Asian & Arabic, both have had to endure massive amounts of racial oppression and no, I don't mean that to start raving or seem like some kind of manic activist but I cannot see how anyone can hate anyone else, whom they probably don't even know based on where they come from or the colour of their skin. Same goes for religion, weight, age and sexual preference. It's all the same thing, it's all hate.
Given, hate is usually a learned thing from family and those around a person as a child. They see that hating someone for whatever reason is okay and that is instilled in them and you know what? I find hate to be the most useless thing. It serves no purpose and it only causes more hate... it's a vicious circle, and people only get hurt as a result.

its all in how your raised and the media doesnt help either. my dad actually told me growing up that the only black person i could bring home is emmit smith from the cowboys. my dads hillbilly white. and my step mom told me growing up that i couldnt date mexicans cause there lying cheaters. my step mom is mexican. its wierd growing up where i do. im about an hour outside chicago. i went to a highschool what was about half black. everyone here judges one another. always saying black people are on welfare and take advantage of the system. there the reasons for shootings and crimes. funny part is whenever im watching the news its a white person being broadcasted for the same crimes. its not one race or the other that commits crimes! my best friend is as white as can be and she abuses welfare when she is able to work! and an even better one. growing up i got messed with alot cause of my name. im a white girl with the name teisha. teachers would over look me in school and boyfriends mothers would always ask if i was black. it didnt bother me. but just because i have a uncommon name im suppose to be another race? its crazy... every race and every culture has its good people and bad people. everyone should give everyone a chance. i know smart and stupid people from every race. and most americans are not one race anyways. think about when you ask someone what nationality they are. you go into a 20 minute thing ohh im dutch, german, irish, blah blah blah. everyone is the same anyways. who cares if there skin is darker or tan or whatever.

Self-loathing, ignorant and raised around lesser beings. Simple as that.
Great question, BTW.

i think that all of us have our little prejudices, even you. however we also have the power to swallow them and the good upbringing that leaves us with good, well-defined moral values. some people are just prejudiced and uneducated!
