At least I never see baseball players wear them while playing.

As part of their uniform, professional and semi-pro teams are required to wear them while on the field. Batters have the choice of wearing them or not under their batting helmet.
Other leagues have their own rules, though for the most part high school and legion leagues required them as well.

Some softball leagues allow players to choose on an individual basis whether they will wear them and some have those visors or partial hats.

I am not sure what ball games you attend, but most ball players wear hats.

Hats provide shade, keep hair out of the way (i.e. Johnny Damon before the Yanks), give the player another point for signs and can keep sweat out of the eyes. They are also good for hiding things, holding sunglasses up out of the way and for hiding the pitchers eyes.
Some pitchers have even used their hats to hide substances for "juicing" their pitches.

Uh, last game I went to all the players in the field had hats on. Early baseball uniforms were based on other uniforms such as military which included head gear so baseball followed suit.

Baseball is a summer sport... summer means alot of sun, the baseball hat provides shade from the rays of the sun.

baseball players wear their hats when they're playing on the field, but not when batting....idk i guess it's just part of their uniform, but it would probably be smarter to just wear helmets all the time to avoid accidents..like if the ball came right back at someone and hit them in the head or something.

Keep the sun off the face, the hair out of the eyes, and used for giving signs to your teammates.

Here is question for ya, ''Why is there only four bases?'' Because there just is okay?! It is part of their uniform, it keeps the sun out of their eyes, and stuff like that.

Never see them wearing them? I've seen thousands of games and I've never seen a ballplayer NOT wear one. What are you talking about?
