Yes it can. Thrombotic material (clots) can travel through the blood into your heart and block one of the arteries supplying the heart. DVT is a major risk factor for myocardial infarction.

Pieces of a DVT can break off and enter the vessels of the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. This can cause death.
