I don't think I need to tell you, I think my avatar speaks for itself. Why? Well Invincible said it pretty well, but also, have you ever LISTENED to his music? That man could sing since he was the age of 5 and younger! He sings songs that mean something. He is one of the only artists out there who writes his own songs the majority of the time. Thriller is still the best selling album of all time with over 104 million copies sold world wide. He has had more number one hits than any other artist. He BROKE all of the records that Elvis set. He's almost 50 years old and he is still writing music and his voice sounds like it did 20 years ago! I don't think there's any arguing it, Michael Jackson is the best singer in the world!

Thom Yorke, frontman for Radiohead, is one of them. His range is positively AMAZING. Falsetto and more and can change frighteningly quickly. Some songs to consider are "Karma Police" "Creep" and "No Surprises".
I like Steve Perry's range, but not the band (Journey).
For a singer/songwriter, it's Elton John. From "Your Song" to "Bennie and the Jets" and "Pinball Wizard", he has no trouble with the high notes even at 53, and he is unequaled in songwriting (with Bernie Taupin.) His Captain Fantastic album was brilliant. The thing about Elton is that he just doesn't stop. Still selling out houses since 1970 - noone but the Stones can boast that! Sir Elton John (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight) is Still Standing and doing it proud.

Haha of course MICHAEL JACKSON.His album THRILLER is STILL the best selling album of all time and he has been awarded with the Legend Award,Artist of The Millenium Award and other awards that prove Michael is the best artist EVER! i.e. to those who think he's not,let me ask u sth:If he's not the best then why has he been awarded with the Legend Award??Why didn't Elton John or Madonna or Stevie Wonder or James Brown receive it???

To be honest, I do not think there is a "best singer" in the world, especially in the current society we dwell in today.
I guess I would say of the commercially successful artists that are well-known, Mariah Carey is my favorite singer for the pop/R&B genre. She has a five-octave range, she is the best-selling female artist of all time, she has 17 #1's, 5 grammies and a heart of Gold.
Okay she doesnt wear the most appropriate clothes, but she is a diva true to herself. She has had bad luck in love, movie roles and other things nonetheless still manages to have a successful career in the music industry--one with longevity.
The most important thing is she LOVES HER FANS!!!

Michael Jackson.. If you wanna know why i picked him just look at Invincible's answer.. He writes his songs, Helps directing his video clips, Helps doing the choreography of his dances (and he's really good at it!).. He does everything, i think he's a genius, he's the king of pop.. the KING! nobody can take his place... Nobody is as good as he is..

MIZZ LAURYN HILL!!!
She has the cool factor, full voiced, not too high but can curl notes like no other hitting blue notes and does it appropriately, and can sustain notes in ballads so she's not just another black woman who can simply curl notes. And she renders songs her own way
I don't care if people think Sister Act 2 is cheesy, but the way she sang in the end was really nice!
She integrated rap/hip hop with rnb/soul
