I am having a discussion with a friend in australia and would like to know if it is the polar bear or not that is the deadliest animal in Canada.

In terms of the animal that actually causes the most deaths in Canada, the top species is actually the domestic dog - which kills or injures many people (mostly kids) every year.

Of native, wildlife species, the top killer is actually the white-tailed deer. This is mostly because of the high number of motor vehicle accidents that occur.

After that is the moose, for much the same reasons.

Since 2003, the next most lethal animal would be the mosquito. West Nile virus, carried primarily by Culex mosquitoes has killed dozens of Canadians in the last five years.

Of attacks by large, predatory animals, the only fatality in Canada I can recall in the last decade was by a cougar on Vancouver Island a few years ago.

While bears, especially polar bears are certainly capable of killing humans should they so desire, they actually very rarely do.

That is a very difficult question to answer. It depends largely on how you define deadliest. The polar bear is definitely very dangerous. It is a very opportunistic hunter, & has to be. However most places in the world define 'deadliest animal' according to the number of people it kills every year. In Canada that is most definately other people if you count them. But I think you are on the right track. I would say it is a toss-up between polar bear, grizzly bear(slightly smaller, generally less aggressive, but more encountered) & moose(seemingly innocent but lookout if its in a foul mood)

The mosquito is right. A near runner-up is the bee, which kills a shocking quantity of humans each and every 12 months as a result of allergies. Snakebites don't seem to be as lethal as humans believe, nor spider bites. Bear assaults account for just a handful of humans each 12 months. Dog assaults, not up to 50 according to 12 months (most effective 34 within the US in 2010).

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but the cougar and grizzly kill the most people.
