My mother is both clever and insane, and me and my brother need to get away from her before she kills one or both of us. I am 17 and my brother is 15. She currently works in a highly unethical profession for a person in her situation (a chaplan at a hospital). She has not only threatened to kill me and my brother, but has abused both of us physically. She abuses us emothionally every single day, and i have suicidal thoughts whenever i am around her. The problem is that we really cant prove the abuse that she has dished out. We are very desperate to know what to do. My real father has divorced her and lives in atlanta, GA; and he wants us to live with him, but my mother wont let us go. Oh, and my mother lives in Augusta, Maine, so i dont know what the laws are there. Please help me, and tell me what to do!

You are at the right age. Have your father pay for plane or bus tickets for you and your brother. Make sure he makes the travel plans to be at the time you and your brother are in school or while your mother is at work. Then make your escape! When you get to GA with your father, then have him go and ask for an emergency custody hearing. Tell the judge your story and make it very clear that you will not go back with your mother under these circumstances and that if you are forced to go back, you will run away again. They usually don't want kids to end up in that situation. You both being teenagers should not have any problem convincing the judge to let you stay with your dad.

Try to keep a diary of the abuse even if it's mental (date everything and document it). If she abuses you physically call the cops and make sure there are pictures of the bruises. That way you'll have some documented incidents if it goes anywhere.

Is there an adult you feel comfortable talking to? School counsellor or sports coach? Maybe they could help in your favour as well.

Do the court orders state that your mother has custody? If there are no court orders you would be able to change your living arrangements more easily although I would think that the reason your mother doesn't want to let you go is because of the child support she gets from your dad.

Your dad needs to hire an attorney in Maine and do a Motion to modify custody. At your age the judge will most likely allow the change.

You have two options here:

1. your real father should petition the court for custody of both of you. He should see an attorney for this.

2. you should see a counselor at your school or doctor's office and find a way to get your mom treated for this. She needs a therapist.

Choose one of these options and act fast; don't delay. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

This is the same thing happening with my neighbors, your dad wants you to live with you right? Well ask you dad to come and help you guys report your mom. If that doesn't work, ask like someone who hears your mom get very abusive with you guys and ask if they can report her to child abuse. Another choice,is wait another year for you to become a legal guardian and take your brother with you to like an apartment or something.

I don't know the laws but you need to talk to someone who can help you. A school counselor, a clergyperson, a crisis hotline -- someone. Don't hesitate, just do it. Good luck.
