I'm writing a paper and it's based on an autobiography. Do I describe events in the book in the past tense or in the present tense? In the book events are described in the past tense...so should I follow that?

It depends if the person is still alive or not.
If the person is alive, do it present.
If they passed away, it would be in past tense.

But I'm only 70% sure....

It it's an autobiography of course you want to describe the events in past tense because they happened in the past.

For a critical essay, you normally want to try to use the present tense and avoid personal pronouns.

So change the format so that it is present tense and you are describing the events in the person's life as though they are happening right now.

i.e.... "as he discovers electricity through his kite experiment, Benjamin Franklin decides that he must share his discovery with the world."
