Some pureed fruit is good. Babies tend to like apple. Or you could try baby rice mixed with his usual milk. Or baby rice and fruit.

Don't give him wheat until he is over 6 months. Babies under 6 months should not be given gluten. And, yes, you are right - rusks and wheetabix contain sugar and salt and really aren't a great choice. Even when wheat is given, it is wise to use it in moderation to avoid an intolerance developing.

If you are just starting foods, the best would probably be rice cereal because it's mixed with his own formula. This will be a familiar taste to him until he gets used to the texture. Then some bananas or jarred cereals with mixed flavors will be fun to try.

The biggest concern with starting foods is make sure that the involuntary tongue-thrust motion is decreased. If he continuously pushes the food back out he may not be quite ready. In this case, you can try a mesh baby feeder. Keep trying with spoon occasionally so he learns how to do that too!

BTW----I started my son on cereal at 5wks and he did great with a spoon. You know your baby better than anyone else, and what's good for one infant may not be so great with another. Don't get too nervous about starting things before the "recommended" age.

My baby was that big at 5 months. It has NOTHING to do with how big a baby is. His insides don't digest food well right now. There's a REASON medical organizations recommend at least 6 months of age, or even later if possible.

Baby is ready to eat solids when baby picks them up and puts them in his mouth, and NOT BEFORE.

Babies should be exclusively breastfed until 6 months old, THEN doctors recommend the slow introduction of solids (rice cereal, pureed foods, etc.) in addition to breast milk. You should also wait 3 days between the introduction of new foods to watch for allergies.
