My side of the family are always happy at Christmas, we share time together etc but there seems to be a lot of jealousy on my husbands side of each other.

Doesn't happen to me, but I know of other families where each partner wants to visit different people, or each family expects their married children to come to them without considering that there are two sets of parents that they might like to see, this isn't helped when partners themselves can't agree. .... and it's supposed to be the Season of Peace and Goodwill to All!!

Blame the in-laws, why not. The fact is you might not consider your sister-in-law to be part of your close family but she is your husbands, just as, if you have more than one child, at some point in the future they will argue about this same thing, no doubt, and their spouses will blame the others' for being the cause of the argument, and then it will be your fault, as matriarch, for making all sorts of stressful demands at christmas, the most relaxing time of the year. -(Irony)- So cut her a little slack everyone needs medication at this time of year, personally I think it is time it was banned, killjoy that I am! - Merry Christmas

This happens so often, and I wish these people would just take a 'chill pill'.
Some people just like to play the victim, some can't cope with the stress, some cannot handle the fact that they have not got all the power, they are usually the ones who take over control of everything, and there are those who's wishes and concerns are always being ignored or overlooked.
PEACE you hear, I want peace this year.
Wishing everyone a PEACEFUL and happy Christmas.

Most people have unrealistic expectations about what Christmas is supposed to be like. People get all sorts of feelings of inadequacy and guilt because of this. Then you have family members coming together, who perhaps don't live near each other because they don't get along all that well. Put it all together, it's a very volatile mix.

It's all the artificial happiness with everyone trying to please everyone. We all have high expectations so there's a conflict between enjoying ourselves and keeping everyone else happy at the same time.
