I was wondering if it costs more (than the current postage stamp price of 41 cents) to send letters to Hawaii compared to the rest of the US on the mainland. I am sending from California, USA.

I am not interested in sending a package, just a regular < 3 ounce letter.

41 cents....
if what you are sending does happen to cost more
you do also have the option of the flat rate envelope. Anything you can fit into the cardboard 8 x 11 folder will ship to any place in the 50 state for $4.10. so if you regularly send letters you might consider putting as many as you can stuff into one of those folders since weight is not an object.
The post office also has a flat rate box (two of them) I believe that they are $8.50 and the also do not have a weight restriction so anything you can fit in there will ship for the same price. This helps a great deal since shipping to and from Alaska and Hawaii is fairly high with respect to the rest of the zones in the lower 48
