understanding our surroundings helps us understand what ROLES we can play in CONTEXT to everything else in the universe.
understanding the creation of everything including us. maybe this is all to prove whether god is real or not.
to learn more about time, gravity, psychics and quantum physics... which could all help us understand reality, and or even control it.
learning more about space has helped us refine our scientific reasoning process and given more info which we applied to other fields like physics and chemistry.
developing new materials and computers systems for the survival of automated robotics or probes
global communications = satellites.
possibly to save the human race in case of an planet wide disaster.
to spread and secure an interstellar area sharing resources and energy.
possible interaction and learning from other species

You Accept it or Not but study of universe helped human race a lot. Ever since mankind aquired the power of thinking, they started gazing properties of stars in the night sky, sun, moon and noticed that the seasons are due the astral bodies, He also started learning more about earth which ultimately led to the development of ASTRONOMY OR ASTROLOGY. You must be knowing the Astronomy(which is developed on constant observation of universe) is very ancient science unlike Physics, Chemistry etc. Infact Astronomy is mother of all sciences.
Day by day, time by time, development of astronomy lead human race in systematic studies and our present day development is only due to the study of universe. in other words astronomy.
You may astound there is no civilization on the globe that had not gazed universe.

The human race as a whole? Probably next to nothing because there are few enough people who can read and write and even fewer who know anything at all about astronomy. And then there is the significant number of people who reject knowledge in favor of religion.
I would look at it from a more personal point of view: what does it mean to YOU? That's way more important.

While the absolute answer to how the universe began is still unknown, the data that is being provided by astronomers, and astrophysicists is helping me form a concept of the constancy of change. There is a lot of information that has and is being gathered by scientists of many nations that is not provided to global population. However, I accept theory of the speed of light as presented by Einstein. I accept that the universe is in a state of expansion. I accept that there are forms of intelligent design and activity, the reality of which is being kept secret. I believe in the process of evolution, and the theory of the survival specialization. of the existing members of, especially, the life forms on our planet. Actually, if the universe did not exist, neither would members of our species.
