If you do any sewing, most likely you have a pin cushion that looks like a tomato with a little dangling bud attached to it. Does this bud serve a purpose other than just being decorative? I don't think these pin cushions are regional just to my area.

This is an easy one my Grandmother taught me years ago when I asked her -

The small, dangling part is for removing any rust that may be on the pin.

Simply push and then pull the pin through the small part a couple times; this should remove any rust on the pin, thereby avoiding getting any rust on the material.

You will notice this small piece feels like it's filled with gravel; this is for removing rust from the pins.

Well... I am SO out of my league on this one. My mom had one of these years ago and my recollection was that the tomato was for pins ond the little strawbery thing was for needles. That way you had a way to keep them separate, and you didn't lose needles that would otherwise become engulfed by the 'tomato.'

I reall some needle and pin experiments and my discovery of the whole concept of invisiblity.

Good luck.

The little hard thing is called a strawberry and it's what you put the small pins and needles in to sharpen them or take off the rust. Not knitting needles.. It's not designed for that. Good Luck!

I think you are talking about the attached strawberry? It's a sharpener. It contains abrasive products which will rasp off tinges and spurs which can affect a pin's performance.

I figured it was something you could grab onto as a handle to get it out of your sewing box with out getting poked from a pin..

Needle and pin sharpener. Stab it a dozen or so times.

The tomato is for straight or quilting pins and the "bud" is for darning/sewing needles.

the lil 'strawberry' is filled with emery so you can push your pins & needles into it to sharpen them
