As soon as you get the keys, go get cleaning supplies, like a broom and dustpan, bucket, scrub brush, some rags, a toilet brush, and some all purpose cleaners. Also, make sure you have garbage bags. Go to the apartment and scrub it down thoroughly, then you won't feel like you're living in someone else's dirt, and you'll be stocked on cleaning supplies so it won't be a hassle if you spill or something. As far as the actual move, I don't know how far you're moving, but if it's not too far, I'd say move over the bare essentials first, then make more trips later. That's what I did when I moved out of my parents' house. Also, if you're able to do that, those big rubbermaid storage boxes work really well. (Cardboard boxes have a tendancy to collapse in the bottom while you're on the way up the stairs and spill the contents everywhere.) Also, you can cram a lot of stuff into those forceflex trash bags. I like those for things like bedding and clothes. As far as the bed and dresser, I'd ask friends, family and coworkers if they know of anyone that has furniture they need to get rid of. You'd be amazed how many people have stuff they don't need and are willing to give to you. When I moved, one of my mom's friends brought me two brand new end table/nightstands and a set of bowls just because she thought I could use them. Somebody else gave me a knife set and cutting board, and about five people offered me couches. And if you don't track down your furniture right away, unfurnished life really isn't that bad. When I moved, it rained pretty much every day for about a month, so I couldn't move anything in the truck... so I used some floor cushions. You can make it work.

Look on craig's list for cheap beds and dressers.

If you don't want anything use... Wal-mart is the cheapest place to find furniture (or a Sams Club or BJ's Wherehouse Club).

If you haven't decided on which complex you are moving into, take a drive throw that complex after 6pm to get what its like when people are home. Make sure the apartment has good flow coming out of the shower and test the hot water to see how hot it gets and how fast it warms up. But the shower flow is a must test.

It sounds as if you don't have a whole lot to move into the place, so take your time in buying your furniture and trust me when i say this. Overtime, replace your furniture with something you really like and it may cost. Cheap furniture has a way of breaking and then you have to re-buy at inopportune times. Wait on the dining room table, but get a good coffee table.

freecycle.org. People give stuff away on that site, and you can request items, but your very first post you have to give something away. It can be just about anything (except like pets, see the guidelines), and then you can request, and if you aren't choosy about style, you will likely get what you need for free!
