Yes. Without question. Keeping it is stealing. I don't take, or keep, what isn't mine, if it wasn't given to me deliberately and freely.

I'm sad for the lack of morals of those who say they would keep it.

I worked for a bank for years and let me tell you this is hard. First of all you did the right thing and notifying the bank asap. BUT they were really really wrong by telling you it's yours do what you want with it. Especially if you are there telling them otherwise. What they should of done was freeze that money and investigate where it came from what bank was it deposited at and who was the teller that deposited it. They did not do their jobs correctly at all. BUT because you did end up spending it you are now held accountable to pay it back. It stinks but you are. As far as them saying they will drop everything I don't believe that. They don't have the power to do that for you. Not even the top bank manager can do that. If I were you I would get a lawyer. I think you can sue the people who told you to spend the money in the first place.

Absolutely ! A mistake on someone else's part doesn't negate your responsibility to be a fair person. Besides, if the bank had made the mistake in reverse, by pulling some of your money in error, wouldn't you speak up then ? You can't call someone on a mistake only when it benefits you.

Trust me. When the bank discovers the error they will get it back. If you take the money out of the bank, the lawyers for the bank will get it back.

In this day and age, you will never get away with it. Besides, what would you want to happen if the bank misplaced your money? Wouldn't you want someone honest to give it back?

I agree with the person who worked in a bank they will catch it. Once I was paid my paycheck twice and the following day, the extra money had disappeared from my account.

The bank will find the error sooner or later. You will have to pay the money back.

I would, but that's because I have worked for a bank, and saw what happens to people who spend that money. Usually causes overdraft fees, and they are not fun at all.

Certainly, since I would also expect them to correct such an error if they TOOK money to which they were not authorized via error.

well you dont have any obligation to rush to the bank and tell them, but if they notice and ask you for the money back, you should cooperate fully.
