For example, I used to hear what I thought was my dad standing right next to me having a conversation with me. However no one was there. That has happened to me, thinking I've heard him, many times, but he would be in another part of the house entirely. I have had it happen with a ton of people, even when they weren't in the same building as me at the time.

I've also heard my name being called several times while listening to a random music cd of all things. When I played it back to determine if I was just hearing things, it was always in the same spot.

What would cause these types of thing to happen? Do the spirits just have fun with it like anything else?

what you hear evokes potentials in your hearing receptors to send a signal to your occipital lobe of your brain then to your temporal lobe then your frontal lobe. By the time the information (1/100ths of a second) gets to your frontal lobe, your brain has already assigned a "meaning" to it. For example, what is the sound, have we heard it before, do we have an emotional connection to this sound, where was the sound, what made the sound.....ect.

Its also quite possible to "hear" things in a silent room. Your brain constatly operates with internal dialogue...with such things as "i think im hungry", "I need to remember to get money," maybe i should clean my room"...ect. We call that our conscious..you may call it spirits.
