So I'm a senior in high school getting ready to apply for colleges but I'm worried about my extracurricular activity, mainly how I had none. I have been a part of two clubs in the past four years but each have only been for one year and I was never very deep into either. I'm worried that it will look bad when I'm applying to colleges, that I'll look uninvolved or like a drifter. If I lied on admissions papers and said I was in groups or participated in things outside of school is there any way they'd find out?

Yes. They can audit your admissions packet and ask for proof later. If you can't substantiate your claims, you can be dismissed for academic and/or scholastic dishonesty or fraud.

I'd put the clubs down, since you were part of them, even if for a year. If they ask about why you did not do more, simply say you were focusing on your courses and grades. That's nothing to be ashamed of.

Consider how you'd feel if you got thrown out for lying on your application. That would feel pretty bad. Not to mention having to explain that when you apply to another college.

Good luck!

First of all, lying is a really bad way to start out with anyone. Secondly, what tends to happen is that if you say you were deeply into things and your references don't mention them, it raises red flags. I've been on admissions teams that turned people down for exactly that reason.

If you have hobbies that you do in your own time you can mention these, or exaggerate them.
