Hi. USB flash cards can transfer at 480 Mbps. So pretty quick. A byte is 8 bits. Do the math, but still pretty quick.

The fastest card tested at http://www.hjreggel.net/cardspeed/ (SanDisk CF Extreme IV 4GB as of January 2007) can read at 30.96 MB/s via USB 2.0 and 40.39 MB/s over Firewire 800. It can write at 22.95 MB/s via USB 2.0 and 33.85 MB/s over Firewire 800.

A card writing at 33.85 MB/s would take 30 seconds to write 1GB.

CompactFlash has a maximum theoretical write speed of 133 MB/s.

That depends on the flash memory transfer rate.
