The $4 gold Stella is actually a pattern coin. There are actually 4 types the 1879 flowing hair and coiled hair types and the 1880 flowing hair and coiled hair type. Now it depends on who made yours as to it's value. Some are gold plated silver and some maybe made of gold like the real pattern. The word copy means they were made after the hobby protection act came to be, I think that was 1972. See if yours is like the ones from the Royal Oak mint, I think they can be reached by going to www.royaloakmint.com or Ken Potter at www.koinpro.com The Royal oak Mint makes some real authentic looking reproductions for us people that can not afford the real thing but love the coin. Their gold coins are gold plated silver planchets. Hope this sets you on the right path.

It's a copy. The originals were produced from 1879 to 1880 in two styles, one with flowing hair and one with coiled hair. The only one that ever had any more than about 18 total minted was the 1879 flowing hair which is believed to have had about 425 minted total.

As you can imagine, a 150 year old gold coin, that never went into circulation, with a mintage so low, is extremely hard to find even for the most discriminate and rich coin collectors. Those who can afford them pay prices in the hundreds of thousands of dollars for these pieces when they happen to find them for sale.

I cannot find information about who produced copies, but I did find a link to a person who is selling one, trying to get $34.95. See the link below, there is also a picture.

The stella never saw regular production, and all of these gold pieces are proof patterns. There are about 15 pattern originals, 425 restrikes, and countless number of design reproductions in the form of silver rounds and gilded replicas. Yours is the latter with the word 'COPY' stamped on the reverse. It's common to find replicas of rare US mint issues, famous patterns and other unique numismatic pieces being made. Some are made according to exact specifications and could be the closest you can get to the real thing. Replicas are not real coins, but they are not fakes either as the word COPY is on each of them.

If it has copy stamped on the back, it is a copy and not the real coin. For one reason or another their are companies who will make copies of coins, but it is the law that these coins have to have a stamp identifying them as a copy or they could be arrested for making counterfeit money.
