Internal - Various forms of cancer, diabetes, infection, emphysema, flu, heart failure, renal failure, brain aneurysm, etc. -- dying of loneliness or a broken heart could fall in this category too as a sort of death of the psyche that manifests as actual death.

External -- falling to one's death, gunshots, knife wounds, attacks by animals, drowning, death by fire, explosions, machinery accidents, electrocution, earthquake damage, mudslides, hurricanes, typhoons, tsunamis, blizzards, starvation, drug withdrawal.

And suicide. And of course many more ways. But those are a few ideas you might choose to hone in on for the story.

I hope that you are serious about this being for a book and not real life. There is hanging, shooting yourself, overdosing on drugs, leaving the car running in a closed garage, etc... You may want to think of something more original though. Use your imagination. Maybe he/she can jump in front of a train! I think that your character should just ATTEMPT suicide and get help though, that is much more positive. You could show the negative side of suicide and make them try to kill themself and end up a vegetable in an institution instead of dying. I'd have to know more about your book though! Make sure you include the number for the suicide hotline in the front of your fiction work and explain suicide is never a solution.

You might research the ways that folks have killed themselves or been killed in times past aka the middle ages. That might spark some creative thoughts.
