Since all the cold/cough meds were recalled for that age the bests things that I have found to help are these:
Menthol bath (Gerber has a bath soap) and keep the door shut for the steam can build up
Sudafed plug-ins at night
Baby vicks on his chest for the stuffiness
It's a real bummer that we're not able to help with a cough, I hate seeing my baby like that and there not being anything I'm able to do. Hopefully someone is able to give you a little help with a home remedie they do! Isn't it honey that helps? I don't remember. Hope your little guy feels better =(

I never used any medications with my daughter. When she has a cold I give her a vapor bath (has to be at least 3 months old which your son is), then I would cover her chest and back with vicks baby rub and I would use a humidifier near her head. I recently bought a Vicks Warm steam humidifier with Vicks vapor for a little over 20 dollars and we love it! IN the past I used a normal humidifier and it worked pretty well. Good luck it should only last a couple of days and things will get back to normal. If you do this in the evening you should get a full nights rest though!

My daughter is three months old and I have been having the same problem. I run a humidifier at night in her nursery. When she has a bath I put vapor bath in the water and I put Baby rub on her chest during the day. Also you can try saline drops in her nose and then about a minute after putting them in you can suctin his or her nose out with an aspirator.....you can buy the drops at most stores, I like Little Noses, because they even make a package that comes with the drops and an aspirator that works really well. But make sure you don't suction more than 3 times a day! It can irritate their little nose. Push either formula or breast milk too.......Just got all this info from her doctor about a week ago. I hope it helps!

Poor baby! Try raising the head of his bed or crib up so his upper body is elevated. This should help him to breathe a bit easier at night. Ask his doctor about giving him a little benadryl at bedtime, too. Other than that, just give him lots of fluids (like apple juice), and lots of comforting.

if your son was older (at least 2 years old) you could just use over-the-counter cold medicine. however, because he's only 16 months you really should have him checked out by a pediatrician. my son had a chronic cough for awhile and his pediatrician prescribed a nebulizer and a pulminary steroid to cure the cough... most insurances will cover these expenses.
good luck.

My son is 18 months, and this isn't fun, but I use saline nasal spray. Just try to get him to lay down and then hold the bottle up to his nostril and let a few drips go in. It should clear things out.

I never believed it...but my ex-wife is Russian. She takes carrots and chops them very thin (food processed) then puts them in a sauce pan and boils them with milk. After it cools, she strains the carrot out. This milk with the carrot juice is ok a little warm or chilled, BUT IT WORKED. I couldn't believe it.

This sounds really odd but it works GREAT. Put Vick's vapor rub on the bottom of his feet then put socks on him, So he can't get his hands on it. And it does truly work, Even if you are doubtful what can you use by trying ?

Keep him as quiet & Comfortable as you can, & see if he'll take alittle extra water & juice... -Like the rest of us, he just has to "wait it out..." He'll be ok in a few days (& better He's sick NOW- than over Christmas!). :)
