I've tried reading about it on wikipedia and what not but simply can't understand the physics behind it all. Can someone answer(as much in layman's terms as possible) how scientists respond to this statement.

At some time early in the world, something was created from nothing.

In order to have had "something created from nothing," there would have to have been a time when "nothing" existed. The Big Bang Theory does not posit such a time.

Nor is the BBT a theory of origins. It makes no statements for times when the universe was less than 10^-35 seconds old.

The Cosmological Constant is a Theory written by Paul Einstein. It gives logic to the concept that everything has to have come from somewhere. You are here; but where were you before then and now? The word world should not be used. You want to know what it was in the nothing. There is no reason to even think about it. Nothing is nothing, not even the mind to ask the question. We have expressed in languages many things but here is what it boils down too.
Energy without mass is the third entity in the second place. Nothing is something, so there is no nothing. It is the relationship between the negative & positive. Take note and understand that it is the trinity: 1. negative, 2. AND (&), 3. positive. One spark, one electrical spark and something became something. Perhaps the first Atom which mirrors the concept of the unity or relationship of the electron, nuetron, protron. All matter exist in 3 states: Solid, Liquid, Gas. Is this too elementry, yes. How it works is even more simpler. For every yes there is a no. for every up there is a down. for every East there is a West. For every man there is a woman. What I am saying here is that the obivous consist of one entity and it's opposite. Solid (GAS) Liquid. What is it that you can not see? Gas? Spirit? Ghost? The third enity exist and it is the Helix. (&). The seventh key on your key board, the day of rest in the Bible, the magnetic wave between the North & South. The power of AND is infinity. All that is in between is what you can not see. That is why a magnet flips. That is why gravity is the relationship between a transmitter (Sun), reciever (Earth) and the Slave (you on Earth) Replace the Sun with Jupitor and the planets will seek the new Sun. The Universe is based on this concept and everything in the Cosmos is in order according to MASS. Gravity is a feeding mechanism. It attracts and or repels. You on Earth is a food source and the Earth will consume. Energy without mass is the energy that attracts or repels. Play with two magnets and feel the force.
The term BIG BANG refers to expansion. Growth (Gravity)
Feeding.
Let the Force be with you.

I can't answer your question, but I can give you some things to look at and some ways to think about it.

When you ask about energy created from 'nothing', a scientist may talk about a quantum singularity.

When you ask about matter being created from energy, a scientist may talk about a photon 'decaying' into an electron and a positron. They may also talk about the zero-point field.

They may hypothesize the formation of the universe from the intersection of M-branes.

They may acknowledge that big bang cosmology is based upon such extreme extrapolation that they can't say this is what happened. All they can say is, we have worked out all the equations and done the math for all the physical laws we know about, and we can't prove it could not have happened this way. Sometimes the even hypothesize new physical laws. They may acknowledge that extrapolation isn't even valid to the point of singularity, and definitely not valid beyond that point.

They should say they can't prove the universe was 'created' by some intelligent entity. But they should also say they can't disprove it, either.

I beleive it has been shown that the universe in actually shrinking. This has been a criticism of the big bang as things would seemingly be moving further and further away from everything else. We are probably in a period of reversal and the universe will slowly become concentrated into all of the mass of the universe due the natural attraction of matter. when all of the matter converges another great explosion will occur and life will start over anew...just different next time.

I believe basically 2 things. 1. The universe to so huge and soooo old that we will only have theories. Since we have learned in our lifetimes largely by cause and effect...we have an innate feeling that things must happen for a reason...which leads me to #2. We fasley feel that all things must have a cause. This feeling is soo intense that people will beleive almost anything when no reasonable answer exists, even if it is completely obsurd. These beliefs fill our inner voids/fears and we continue on with our lives.

No, the big bang never states that something was created from nothing... It simply says that all the matter and energy in the universe was compressed into a infinitesimally small point and then expanded. We don't know know how the point all the energy and matter got compressed into that point, but we just know that it came to be like that.

space is complicated. matter and energy is complicated..and this is the greatest mystery of all time. and argument of all time. where did we come from? if we came from big bang where did the energy and matter come from? if we came from some god..where did god come from..we may never know, and probably wont. there is no clear answer to that question.

the word "created" implies that something was formed or or somewhat came up out of nothing.. coz i think maybe your just confused about the phrase "early in the world..."
these just mean that out of nothing (maybe from things the eye can't see or human insight can't understand) something was created..

did i help you somehow.??
or made it complicated..?

Scientist in general care little about beliefs. They only care about reality. If you need help with your belief system, please ask your religious leaders. And since you seem to believe that something came from nothing you really need some instruction because neither science nor any religion I have heard of make that statement.

Good luck with your education! I hope it gets better soon!

:-)

Basically, all the matter in the universe was at one point, a singularity. It went boom. Fast forward, here we are.
