I have cable internet connection which uses a router. My internet connection is down very often through out the day every day. Everytime it is down, I would have to unplug the internet cable connection from my router, then replug it in again, over and over and over, until my internet connection works again..... What is wrong with my internet connection? Do I just have a defective router or is it my internet provider's fault ? Which means, I should call my internet provider about this?

well there are other factors too. It could be the router. Do you use stuff like Bittorent, utorrent, etc something where it acts as a server? Cuz that kinda drains your connection. It could also be viruses and that someone is stealing your internet.

If you have a network cable from your cable modem to your router, try plugging that directly into your PC instead. If you continue to get failures, then it's most likely your ISP or a faulty cable modem. If the failures stop then your router was likely the problem.

If you only have one PC, then don't need the router and can connect the cable modem directly into your PC - unless your router is built into your cable modem, which is sometimes the case. If that is what you have, call your ISP and ask them to run a diagnostic on it or ask them to replace it.

It's also possible that you have a virus or spyware on one or more of your computers which is actually causing the disconnect, so make sure to run a full virus scan and spyware scan. If you have multiple PCs on your network, scan all of them and try testing your internet connection with only one PC at a time connected. This will help you determine if one of your computers is the problem. If it is, take it to a professional technician to have the problem diagnosed and fixed.

Cable is affected by other users. Meaning if 10000 people access the net at the same time of off the same cable to the company, then the access will be slower. Although DSL is slower, it is a direct link between you and the provider. Another possibility is the router. What I would suggest is use an Internet speed test to see what you net speed is when it is normal, then trying again when it doesn't work. Then call the customer support for your provider, and have them run a diagnostic. I had a problem with my cable, and it was the users (although they told me there was no problem.) I went to dsl, and vola, perfect all the time.

You should definitely call the internet service provider. Thats what I did when my connection was down and figured out what was wrong very quickly.

If your router is Wifi and isn't encrypted someone else could be using the router bandwith capacity, leaving very little bandwidth for you.
