SOUTHERN CALIFis composed of several different areas, two being both high and low desert areas. Sometimes it snows around Landcastor/Palmdale area, which is high desert, and then you have Death Valley with the highest temps and the lowest elevation. the rains stay on the west side of the mountains and it's beautiful southern california weather, along the coast. As the moisture is lost, there is no water for the east half of southern California or Arizona or Nevada. Thus it's desert!

Southern California is "Semi-Arrid." Which means it is almost desert, but not quite. However, the vast numbers of swimming pools and irrigation installed over much of the Los Angeles and San Bernadino counties have actually changed the humidity patterns in Southern Cal. Not natural, but a change anyway.
