In every International tournament at least one group gets labelled "the group of death" by the media!

The term means a group in which there are more "top" teams than qualifying spots so at least one of them is going to fail to reach the later rounds which you would normally expect them to do.

Group C contains Italy (the current world champions), France (the runners up at the last world cup), and Holland (currently ranked 9th in the world according to FIFA). Romania are the weakest team in the group but are ranked 13th currently and are capable of pulling of a surprise.

As the top two teams qualify for the next round, somebody is going to be going home a lot sooner than they would normally expect... thus it is "the group of death".

OK,the word "death" seems a little too much. But Group C IS the most challenging ,difficult and hardest of the 4 groups.Three of Europe´s best teams are in Group C:Italy,France and the Netherlands.Don´t forget:
Italy and France made first and second place at the Worldcup 2006.All of the 3 teams won at least one time in the history of the Euro! As a fan of the "oranje team",the Netherlands,I know what I´m talking about.I was shocked after yesterdays drawing!

People consider this the strongest group because of the two finalist of the last world cup. The Netherlands are first on the European qualifying list and Romania were in the same qualifying group as Holland and have beaten the Dutch at home.

As a Dutchman I don't have much faith in my country reaching the next round, mainly because they have played very poor as of lately.

I think Italy and Romania will reach next round and eventually Germany will win Euro 2008

Basically, you have three teams in Group C that are the top seeds in a World Cup Qualifying Group. The other three groups in Euro 2008 only have two teams that are top seeds in World Cup Qualifying Groups. In addition, two of the teams in Group C are likely to be top seeds at the World Cup.

With the possible exception of Romania out of Pot 3, Group C drew the top team in each pot and even Romania is a tough team.

Well with World Cup Champions Italy, and World Cup runners up France, and VERY competitive Netherlands with premier players, and a fairly decent Romania team, I think it's a legitimate statement to label it the "Group of Death." Romania is the weak team of the group, but any of the other 3 teams would have a legitimate chance at wining Euro2008, but one won't even advance out of group play, when they most likely would have in any other group. Should be good tv for all of us though, a premier match every week in that group alone...I'm looking forward to it

Coz France, Italy and Holland its a superior team, they was in semifinal on Euro 2000.
They have a good team, good skill and good experience.
France and Italy was in final of World Cup 2006.
Thats why Group C being called the Group of Death.

The group of death is traditionally referred to the group with the most difficult opponents. In this case, Italy, France, the Netherlands and Romania, all European heavyweights in their own right, are slugging it out to move to the next round.

the Group C of the 2008 UEFA European Championship finals was dubbed as the Group of Death because all 4 teams in the group capable of reaching the quarter-final stage & all matches between these teams are really tight. there is really no margin for errors in this group.

i'm not even gonna make a prediction....I even have not something against the Italian team yet I do opt for Spain to win although I have no concept who is going to...I mean Italy wasn't outstanding in the team ranges, Spain became into the team degree winner yet then so have been Holland, Croatia and Portugal and seem the place they have ended up!
