So I am exploring some ideas for a career. I just recently graduated and now want to get my life rolling. I was considering being a naturopathic doctor, but 8 years in school...I don't think I could do that. I have always considered opening a business, of many kinds. I was just wondering if anybody could give me any advice on things to read or classes to take to learn about all of that? And to anybody who has a business or is planning on it, I know its risky regardless, but with hard work if I have alot of knowledge and a set goal, is it very unlikely to succeed in that field?

Thanks a ton

Well, regardless of what type of business you are going to start, you need capital. And depending on the type of business, that could be a lot fo capital. First, what type of business experience do you have?? If you have none, get a job in the field you want to start a business in to get some experience and find out if you like it. Take college classes in business. You need to know about everything, from the basics to business management to finance.

Contact your local SBA (Small Business Administration). They have seminars and can help you draw up a business plan and secure capital. But keep in mind, all the people there are volunteer. Don't waste their if you aren't ready to do something. You can't just walk in and ask "what type of business should I open" or whatever. Do your homework first. Get a the basics of a business plan down. They can help you expand upon it.

Also, know that 90% of small businesses are out of business within a year. And most small businesses aren't profitable for 2-5 years, if that. Capital is a big deal, and if you have do experience, no one is going to take a risk on you be giving you the money you need to start a business. Make sure you do all your research and are really ready and have thought it through before you go full time.

But there is always the option of working full time and starting a small business on the side. You can learn the basics of running a business and learn if it would be profitable to make it your full time gig.
