Baking soda definitely works, so does borax. Either one, the key is to work it into the carpet, let it sit to absorb odors, then vacuum it up. Buy the baking soda in bulk at Sam's/Costco, etc.; borax is generally with laundry detergents in other shops.

One advantage that borax has over the baking soda for carpet care ~ the fine powders and general properties of the borax kill adult fleas, dry up their eggs and larvae, and have the same effect on other lttle creatures that like to come into our cozy homes!
