They live 90 miles from me. They want me to watch their house so they can go on vacation. I get no benefit at all from doing this. I will be going to college 2 days a week and currently don't have a job. They know this, and now expect me to drive 90 miles and live in their house for 5 days out of 7 for two weeks. This is ridiculous don't you think?
It's not like they live down the street. The weather is crappy this time of year (actually they are leaving next month, which is even worse). Should I tell them to find someone else to watch their house?

I should add that I am not that young. I saved a lot of money from my previous job and am going back to college for a second degree. Every time I have a bit of spare time, they think that i should drive home to watch their house or do some chore. I am not working because I need a break. I don't want to spend my spare time driving on icy roads and farting around in a house with no internet access and nothing whatsoever to do.
I am not 18 years old. I am 29.

People will try to guilt you into doing anything parents ask of you. Parents quite often think that you are obligated to be at their beck and call regardless of what you have going on in your life and at a moments notice. What's worse is that some buy into that and try to guilt you into it too.
You live about two hours away from their house. With gas prices the way they are and you not working right now, it could be somewhat of a burden on you. It's certainly an inconvenence.
There is a time when parents have to let go. This is a way for them to try to keep control.
Tell them flat out that you don't want to do it and to get someone else to who doesn't live two hours away. You don't live there and you don't want to stay there. Who's going to watch your place for you for two weeks? Who's going to pay for the extra gas? What's going to compensate you for the unpleasentness of being away from home? There's no place like home. Why would you want to be away from there if your not on vacation yourself?
Bottom line. YES. IT'S UNREASONABLE.
Best Wishes

Hmmm... Are your parent's paying for your college? If you don't have a job, how are you supporting yourself? Could it be that they are helping you financially? Even if not, they supported you for at least 18 years, and I'm sure they spent a lot of time driving you to events, spent money buying you presents and allowance, etc... Yet you won's help out for two weeks because you "get no benefit" from doing so.
I am constantly amazed at how self-centered and selfish young people are today. If you don't want to help your parents, fine. But to be fair to them, you should also refuse all help from them in the future. Get a job, pay your own bills, pay for your own schooling, etc...
Either that or grow up and realize how much your parents have given you, and give a little back.

And what is so wrong with free housing and food. So four day's in two weeks you need to drive to school. What did your parents give up the hole time you were growing up. Be a good kid. And if you have to think of it this way if it helps, When they get back they will owe you one

They should understand if its too inconvienient for you. Also as your parents they shouldn't want you driving in crappy weather conditions. Are they paying you for this not to sound awful but it takes gas to get there right? 90 miles is not around the corner you know. Good luck getting them to understand maybe to help keep the peace can you suggest someone that would be willing to do it instead?

I am a parent of a son your age ; but I guess I am lucky that my son realizes the thing`s that myself and his father have done for him in his life.I would`nt have to ask him twice to do something for us.

I think that's pretty ridiculous. They don't have any friends in the neighbourhood who can water their plants every few days? Honestly, it's a house. It can manage without them.

Like you have never inconvenienced your parents? Use this time to show you parents how much you love them and support them and how mature and giving you are they will never forget you for your kindness and support that is something money cannot buy you.
