You don't need an Ipod for itunes it's just that you need Itunes to put songs onto your Ipod. Nothing else is compatible with itunes but you can go ahead and download songs and burn them onto a cd.

Any MP3 player should work. Before I got my iPod I had an RCA MP3 player and all I had to do was install the software it came with and drag the songs from iTunes into the player. Keeping in mind that I have a Mac, I don't know if it's the same deal with Windows but I'd think it is, as long as you install the software (and that the player is compatible with your operating system, of course).

If you buy from regular itunes, you need an ipod. They protect their files so that only their players can read them. But if you only buy from itunes plus, it is drm free so you can convert them to any fromat and play the songs on any player.

iPod
UNLESS...
You take the DRM off:
1. Apps do this. MAC AND PC (Google it)
2. Burn to a CD, then delete DRM. Insert Burned CD. Import without DRM, and ENJOY
