I have to say, this is another one of those times where I agree with Bush. China's treatment of Tibet and Taiwan is wrong. At the very least, we should not be kowtowing to them in these areas.

This is an excellent question that I have asked about as well. It seems your querry is getting the same pointless responses as mine.
Just to clear up for ya'll. Taiwan is independant. Has been since 49. It is also a democracy. Chinese not only need a passport but also a visa to go there.
As for selling weapons, that is just good strategey. You don't want China invading Taiwan. The Taiwanese would most definately not take it sitting down. It would destroy a lot of infrastructure and cause a global reccession like never before. Many companies are now moving to China, but Taiwan is and has been a bigger source for many years. It would be foolish and morally neglegent to allow China to invade. China WILL invade anytime it feels it can win, which it can't as long as the US keeps selling them superior weapons. Just ask any random Chinese person and say "China is not part of Taiwan" and the sensless explosion of anger and hatred pouring from thier mouths will explain everything.
Tibet is a different issue. Tibet is a part of China. China ousted the Dali Lama. They hate him and anyone talking to him.
So, why have talks with him? Pros: possibly get a few more hippie votes? Doesn't sound good enough.
Cons: Make a mess of Sino-US diplomatic and trade relations.
From this I couldn't say. It's very strange indeed and I'm sure there is a good answer just not forthcoming. What worries me more is that he got Canada to do it too! Check this out:

If you figure it out, let me know!

Why do you say they are trying to offend China by honoring the Dalai Lama?? He is a great man and a great influence!
He has worked towards peace his whole life, and if anyone deserved that award, wouldnt it be him?? Please do some research on him, and the situation in Tibet!
I personally think China is heading down a horrible path for our planet, animals, and the Chinese people, Tibetan People and everyone else in the world. They have to much power right now seeing as the make most the products in this country!! The dictatorship is wrong in itself, but the health conditions in china, the way the people are treated, what they are doing to the environment, and what they are doing to people in Tibet is wrong and inexscusable!!!
so whats your point?

Kelly B., Mel and several others have it, correctly.
Taiwan has had to continue their fight, with China, since their independence, after WW ll. China just won't 'let it go'. This all started with the Chinese Communist, in 1946, and after 60 years, one would think that it is time to 'let sleeping dogs, lay.'
The Dalai Lama, about the same way. Just because China is the BIG Power, these smaller nations need to have their individual sovereignty honored.

Should we just abandon Taiwan, and forget out pledge to them because it offends China? Should we just cut off all relations with the Dalai Lama because that also offends China? We probably do a lot of things that offend China, such as honoring our UN Commitment in helping to enforce the 1953 Korean ceasefire.

Kelly, honoring the Dalai Lama shouldn't be considered as animosity. Selling weapons to Taiwan . . . Hmm . . . Well, I think that it's pretty clear that by selling weapons to Iran, North Korea, Syria and many of our other adversaries, China has demonstrated that "animosity" isn't something they're entirely concerned with, so why on earth would the United States be concerned with rubbing China the wrong way? Believe me, there's a LOT of MONEY to be made in arms sales, and both China and America intend to cash in on it all no MATTER who it "agitates".

I have to say that I don't totally understand this question. The Bush Administration is pure evil! China's government is pure evil!, and the Dalai Lama is one of the best people in the entire world. As far as selling Taiwan weapons, I don't know anything about that, but I have no doubt that this is a bad thing. I would think that China deserves to be offended, and the Dalai Lama deserves to be honored. Also, I am not sure about this, but I have to ask, what is the connection between Taiwan and the Dalai Lama? The Dalai Lama's home country is Tibet! *sm*

The award is in recognition of the Dalai Lama's advocacy of religious harmony, non-violence, and human rights throughout the world and for his efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Tibet issue though dialogue with the Chinese leadership.
The bill enjoyed broad bipartisan support, with 387 cosponsors drawn from both political parties in the House and Senate, representing more than two-thirds of Congress.

A better question is: "Why is China acting like such an evil bully and persecuting the Dalai Lama and constantly threatening democratic and FREE Taiwan?"
As for expecting some quid pro quo from China, forget it. Red China is the world's biggest menace, right up there with Islamic terrorism.
