Native Americans were destroyed and the survivors were herded into reservations by Americans; blacks were slaves and black men were systematically lynched for decades in the south as a way to control black Americans. Black Americans who had syphilis were experimented with, and even after a cure was found, were not given the cure, but allowed to slowly die, as part of a US government research study. This "study" did not end for decades after a cure was found for syphilis.
During WWII, Japanese Americans were taken from their homes, their property confiscated, and were incarcerated in US concentration camps, or "internment" camps. A few German, Italian, and Russian Americans were sent to the camps as well. After the war ended, they did not get their property returned, and were "allowed" to leave the camps with practically nothing. But they weren't killed.
During the early part of the AIDS crisis in the US, we actually had some members of Congress suggest that gays should be rounded up and sent to "camps" in Florida, to protect "normal" Americans. They even talked about ways to identify and mark gays so you could tell who they were (maybe they were thinking of the pink triangles the Nazi's made gays wear?)
Anytime fear and ignorance abounds, evil and genocide can take place. Look at how Middle Easterners and Muslims and immigrants are being demonized in the US right now...

8 years ago I would have said it was highly unlikely. I don't think the military would go along with slaughtering people here in this country, and there were no facilities in place to carry out a genocide. Now things have changed. The Bush admin. has secret facilities and prisons as well as private armies like Blackwater USA. The fact is, the govt. could be executing Arabs in Gitmo and other locations and we wouldn't know it.
I don't think it's happening and I don't think it will, but we do now have the means to carry it out. If the govt. ever decides to do it in the future, I don't think the American people would do anything to stop it.

i don't know about genocide since that's the mass killing of a certain ethnic group and America is such a melting pot that would be hard to accomplish. i think it would be more likely to happen along the economic divide. it's not hard to envision an eventual class struggle as the "haves and have mores" keep getting and having more while the rest of the American citizenry falls deeper into poverty and despair. 10s of millions of people living in despair is a dangerous thing, especially when most of them are armed. national emergency, martial law, riot gear, roll out the tanks and Blackwater ... such a scenario (this is not a prediction) could get messy.

If ignorance spreads to point Holocaust not known American Neo Nazis could be voted in by public persuaded jews are evil. And yes you know of course it has happened already in The U.S. Genocide against indiginous population and in Canada by Canadians against indiginous population Cultural that is .Children takenfrom parents to Residential schools culture crushed out of them. It could happen to Communists because it appears some people believe Communists are evil in The U.S. Stalin a new Stalin could be invoked and Gulags mentioned. perfect UN peacekeeping disaster for EU. Then this would be celebrated as a triumph for democracynot saying will happen .When Castro dies supression perhaps not so severe will follow or maybe U.S. will kill people who think Castro not evil and later have uncontested view of Communism in Cuba as evil Castro a mass murderer. Then anyone who contests this will be told their ignorence is appalling. Torture murder in past means nothing to people 400 years in future. Same will occur.

The treatment of Native Americans 150 years ago could be considered genocide. But now? No chance. America is still a huge melting pot, and no racial or ethnic group could have the power to begin a genocide movement.

It has happened. Native Americans were slaughtered and corraled like animals for many, many decades. In modern America I do not think this could ever be allowed to happen.

Yes it could happen but only if we were taken over and ruled by a foreign country and no longer America.

I take it that you're asking if it could happen now? The answer is, yes, of course it's possible. However, it's extremely unlikely.

The pro-life groups will tell you that millions of babies are being killed every year for the sheer fact that they have no legal rights and are not considered people.
In the history of this country, many many people were not considered "people". Blacks were considered property and only counted as a fraction of a person in the census.
