Cost of living is higher -- housing, transportation, food, etc. So you're making more, but you're paying out more than you used to, too.

Some workers' wages haven't increased that much. Just because the government increased minimum wage doesn't mean that employers who pay slightly higher than minimum wage increase their employees' wages at the percentage of the minimum wage increase. And with the cost of everything increasing, those workers are actually behind now. In addition, many workers who were making minimum wage and were receiving benefits, such as health insurance for their children and daycare benefits, have seen those benefits slashed. The increase in minimum wage really did nothing for the working poor but make their lives harder.

Can you cite how the average hourly worker wage has improved? The numbers I'm familiar with, US Bureau of Labor Statistics, show very small gains in wages. However other costs have gone up greatly. College, medicine, housing and gasoline has all increased markedly in the last few years. I don't see improvement for the average worker.

Pop bought our house in 1953 for $11,000 and we lived well on one income. You just can't own and get by on one income any more so who is better off?
