For christmas I am getting an HP Pavillion and I am wondering how to get all of my music, media, documents, everything off of my family Desktop and onto the laptop. I use itunes to store my library, but 95% of the media is from C.D.s. I don't have an iPod or any other large portable hard drive that I could copy all my failes to and download onto the laptop. Does any one know an easy way to move about 8-10 GB from my Desktop to my Laptop? Thanks!

If your Desktop has a DVD burner (or CD burner if you have a lot of disks) you can burn backups. Otherwise, ethernet (preferably gigabit) would work well.

You use a Ethernet cable (usually the blue one) and connect the two directly together unless you have a router connect them through there instead. Move all the files you want into one large folder. Right click on it and configure the sharing of the files on the network. View them on your laptop through the my network places, where you will see the files you are sharing and then you can just copy them across to your laptop.

If you have any problems post a thread at my website http://www.wired.profusehost.net/forum if you would like me to help you further.

get a crossover network cable and connect the two computers direct via their network ports ... or if you're going to have both computers on the net using a switch or router then you can set up a home network and transfer the data that way
Just go to the help menu and ask for help in setting up a home network ... it's pretty basic and simple to do... although with Vista you may encounter the odd glitch or two

Probably the quickest way is just to burn the files onto multiple CDs or DVDs and just open them up in the new system. The media is cheap, plus this gives you a backup.

create a wireless network with your laptop. and stick all the files in the appropriate sharing folder. you get there by going into network connections on the desktop.

The easiest way will be to plug in your current HDD as a secondary/slave on the new computer. That way you dont have to do anything, all your files are still safe with you.
