Ian Smith, who recently died in S. Africa, attempted to hold 'Rhodesia' togather as a black state dominated by white europeans. While there never was the same racisim in Rhodesia and blacks were full citizens, the economic power was held mostly by whites. Somehow, that didn't sit well with some elements of the black public, leading to a revolution supported for the most part by Russia hoping for a foothold in Africa. After the revolution ending in 1980, Rhodesia was renamed Zimbabwe after the ancient African kingdom that once controled that area. Unfortunately, things began to go down hill for everyone involved soon after. Now it's more or less another failed state. As Robert Ruark once wrote, "...if you're going to change something of long standing, be certain you change it for something of value." That didn't happen in Zimbabwe!

In the free elections of February 1980, Mugabe and his ZANU won a landslide victory. Mugabe has won re-election ever since. During the first decade of independence, Mugabe used the North Korean trained Fifth Brigade to silence any opposition from the Ndebele nation in an operation against dissidents referred to as Gukurahundi. Several thousand civilians, mostly Ndebele, were killed or disappeared and have not been accounted for to this date. Allegations of genocide and ethnic cleansing have resulted in calls for Mugabe's arrest and prosecution for crimes against humanity.
