So I am stumped. Cigs are legal, alcahol is legal, but pot is illegal? There has never been any deaths from pot, and last time I heard alcahol and cigs were alot worse then pot for your health.
Alot of you may not know, but I think it was every 1 in 5 people smoked pot. Pot may be illegal, but it is not preventing anyone from getting it, selling it or using it. You cannot get addicted to pot, and you cannot have any life changing expierences from it. You may also be surprised on how many students in highschool smoke it
Just because it is illegal, does not mean its going to stop any of us from using it.
So can someone give me some good info on why pot should stay illegal?
my opinion, it should be legal.

I have done my research. It says on every resource that pot is NOT known as a deadly drug.
You say you CAN get lung cancer in a long term, but so can you with cigs. They are not illegal?

Obviously public health risks are of no concern of the government (unless it cuts into their tax collection).
Some parts of the government apparently make more money on marijuana as a cash crop than they ever could if it were to be legalized and anyone were allowed to grow and sell. The price of pot would go down to virtually zero at that point. Keeping it illegal definitely helps to manage the market competition.
You'll probably never see any public reason for pot being illegal, other than "it's a gateway drug" which is obviously not true or else according to those statistics you heard, 1 in 5 people would eventually become heroin addicts or speed freaks. Aside from that, the government can't come out and give their real reasons for keep pot illegal.
Also, you may notice that the majority of potheads are reluctant to just go along with the system. Pot has an effect on people that makes them slow down and look at things with a dash of paranoia. Anyone who beings to examine the USA system this way more likely to question the surveillance society we are becoming and that also makes things harder for the government, so why give them the opportunity?

I am a pot smoker, have been for about 12 years off and on.
Now you havent mentioned any politics in your argument about legalization. The government has a lot of money invested into the cotton industry, If they legalized pot hemp would just take over the cotton industry. Also, making pot illegal does stop people from smoking pot, not everyone but it stopped me before. When your on probation they give urin tests and job applications often require urin tests too. Everybody is affected differently from pot, sometimes it makes people lose motivation, some just makes people stupid, and some nothing happens at all, and by the way pot can become very addictive trust me i know ive been addicted to weed myself.

Because if pot were legal it could destroy oil companies. Hemp is a really good source of alternative, clean fuel, and the government doesn't want that. Also, hemp it a great fiber for clothing, paper, and even food. It could put timber industries out of business. Hemp can be grown THC free, but not even that is legal.

Well it may be ok for some people but i have seen people with serious mental health issues brought on by long term smoking of pot.
people who smoke tend to be anti socioal lazy unmotivated and nasty when they dont have any.
It leads to the use of harder style drugs.
And most importantly how are the government going to make money out of everyone else selling growing and using pot.
If they cannot regulate the growing selling and quality of the weed they will not legalise it.

I have read this on A/Y dozens of times. As matter of fact my mom was dating a man that died at 52, didn't smoke cigs, but did get high for years. he contributed his cancer to pot.

It's illegal because a majority of Americans want it that way, pure and simple. You want it to be legal, start convincing others you are right.
