How similar to the violin is the mandolin? I've already been playing the violin for almost six years, so i was wondering how easy it would be to start playing the mandolin right now. The notes are the exact same, right? Thanks a lot =).

I don't know why Jay got a thumbs down since he had the correct answer. A mandolin and violin are tuned the same, neither is anything like a guitar. A guitar has six courses, the other two both have four. The mandolin just hase two-string courses rather than single string. A mandolin is a fretted instrument, but if you can find the notes on a fiddle, you can likely find them on the mandolin.

Good luck.

I have played both violin and mandolin. Yes, the notes are exactly the same (just on the mandolin you have frets, which makes it easier to find the notes). It is a little different than violin because a lot of the time you will be playing chords while someone else has the melody. I found that the hardest part was getting used to strumming and picking with my right hand, since I was used to using a bow on the violin. That part feels a little awkward at first (kind of like how it probably felt awkward to hold the bow correctly when you first learned violin). But it is relatively easy to learn after having played the violin.

Yeah, the mandolin is tuned the same as a violin. You see a lot of fiddle players who also play the mandolin.

If you play the violin, I think you'd learn the mandolin pretty easily - the difficulty is learning how to pick strings instead of using a bow.

A mandolin has 8 strings and is picked versus a "violin" (fiddle) which has 4 and uses a bow.
Having musical knowlege you should be able to adapt.
