questions on any of these subjects if they don't agree with the way they were brainwashed? What is the use of living in a country where freedom of speech is allowed if you are afraid to hear any free speech?

As an American, I am going to try to get this question removed. Hahah. Just joking. You, sir, are being a bit prejudiced. I can assure you that I am indeed an American and love nudity, laughing at the bible, sneering at muslims, debating about guns and abortion, etc.

I will give you your point, to an extent. The 'old-guard' American's are a bit xenophobic and don't understand other cultures.

HERE'S THE ANSWER PART.

I think this stems from the general Isolation in our country. In Europe, many people can hop on a train and, within hours, be in a different country with a different culture and different language. In the USA I can drive (hardly any passenger trains to speak of)...I can drive for 16 hours east and hit water, 24 hours + west and hit water, 16 hours south and hit water and about 8 hours north and hit canada, where they speak English. On the surface their culture is pretty similar to ours. American's could also travel to Mexico, but most places that one can travel to inexpensively are not very inviting to the vacationer. The places that offer sites to see and things-to-do tend to be quite Americanized.
Contrary to popular belief, American's are not swimming in money. MOST of us can not afford to travel to Europe, Asia, Africa etc. If we do, it is a once-in-a-lifetime thing.

Most American's work so much that they are physically and mentally drained by the end of the work day. After having dinner with the family, there is not much left to contemplate anything. We are really quite brainwashed here- did you know that there are NO laws here granting workers vacation time off work? Did you know that when a woman has a baby, she only has the right to some time off WITH NO PAY!!! Also, most employers make their worker's feel guilty for taking vacation and even for taking a day off when they are ILL!! I can not count the number of times that I have called in to tell the boss that I am sick and can not make it in and he has treated me like I was personally trying to ruin the business and make everyone's life harder. Seriously! 99% of American's do not even know that we are so backward in these things.

Another bit to the puzzle- we are raised speaking English and are not required (or even prompted) to learn another language. If we do decide to learn a language, it is generally a few years of Spanish lessons in high school. I've learned more German in the last two weeks studying on my own than I learned Spanish in my 3 years of classes in High School.

On the Christianity part- it has been extremely Christian here. I've been an atheist for 17 years or so (30 now). Until recently I kept it a secret from most people. It is a taboo subject and people generally look at Atheists as scum or 'satan worshippers'.

I think there is a new day dawning though. The current political climate in the US has raised a lot of eyebrows and awaken the dissent in many many Americans.

I hope I've helped give you something here.

I'm not so sure that we have freedom of speech currently. We have something that borders it, but there are still things that we are not allowed to say, legally, and others that are highly frowned upon, socially.

If you think this is an American phenomenon, then you are grossly ignorant of the rest of the world. Some Americans can be rather puritanical, but many other cultures around the world are at least or more conservative. This is actually one of the few countries around the world where it's considered embarrassing or taboo to be openly intolerant of a people or idea.

By the way, while I admit I mostly hang out in the Philosophy section of Y!A, I have very seldom seen any questions deleted, and I don't think I've ever seen a question deleted solely because of unpopular or controversial content. Off-topic? Yes. Abusive or threatening language? Yes. But those are not the same as deleting for controversy.

And if you think most or all Americans are "brainwashed," then I'd suggest getting off your high horse and actually getting to know more of us. I find it hard to come up with any adjectives that could describe all 300 million of us.

I can't accurately answer your questions, but how I wish I could. It seems to me that we as Americans only like to hear or see things that we agree with. I personally find it to be ridiculous. If the many Americans think that a movie goes against Christianity in any way people will do their best to stop it from being seen. It seems as though people try to ridicule anything they do not agree with, if it is a popular topic. I like your question though. IM me sometime if you want. I like talking about these things.

Not all Americans are brainwashed, I'm the kind who wants to hear there questions and ideas, get their point of view. As far as the living in the US part goes, thats the same idea as saying "I don't like blacks" (which is not true, just being used as an example), if you say that, some how you'll end up either dead or sued. People fear differences, and different points of views just pushes the arguement.

The people of this country are under a constant barrage of misinformation, placation, and obfuscation. Many cannot decipher honesty from illusion. Emotions run rampant, despair is growing, and fear dominates. As long as these conditions exist, 'freedom' will remain just a word.
