Maybe, you need a router.
I got my modem and router (it transmits from the modem to my laptop) from my cable company.
And, don't use a 2.4 GHz cordless phone when you're using the laptop. It will interfere with the router and disconnect your Internet service; routers and cordless phones use the same frequency. Land lines and cell phones won't interfere.

It sounds like you're looking for a modem that is compatible with a Desktop and a Laptop? Look for external modems. They're around but less common as broadband has become more available.

Most people just buy a router but you can call your ISP and see if the have wired/wireless modems available. Many do for an extra charge.

If you are talking about dial up connections, a 56k external modem will work with both:

OTherwise, if you are going broadband (DSL or Cable) they will provide you with a broadband modem, and a router will allow you to share the connection across both machines simultaneously.
