I've been dancing for a long time and I've finally decided to take up ballroom dancing, but I don't know what shoes to wear. I have character shoes, but I know that they do have shoes specifically for ballroom. Should I invest in a pair, or are my character shoes fine? Please let me know! Thanks in advance!

It is up to your teacher, really. and how the school is protective of its floors.

If you will have an absolute beginner as a partner, and you are learning ballroom dancing, you might pick up steel toe shoes. LOL.

As most people have said your character shoes are ok to start with but if you plan to do competitions/exams, it's worth getting a pair of ballroom shoes- a good heel height to start with is about 1 1/2 to 2 inches as it's not too high and you can still rise sufficiently for a beginner(i found making rises and falls more pronounced helped me to begin with). Also, a suede sole is a must for the more strenuous dances in my opiniion as it helps your feet slide/move more naturally over the floor.
Hope this helps and good luck!

Use your character shoes for now. You can buy ballroom shoes later when you have some experience of what it feels like and you'll know more what to look for. In general, good ballroom shoes are softer than charachter shoes. There are 5 kinds of ballroom shoes for ladies (and 3 kinds for men). Standard, Latin, Smooth, practice/teaching and social shoes. If you will be dancing more than one style of ballroom you will eventually get a pair for each style and probably practice shoes too.
Practice shoes are universal for all styles. They are soft enough to allow you to point your toes yet they provide enough support for Standard/Smooth.
All ballroom shoes have suede soles.

character shoes should be fine but every teacher is different.
I would suggest holding off on investing in a new pair of shoes until you start the class. If the teacher tells you to buy a pair of ballroom shoes... then you should.

The best shoes for ballroom will have suede soles. For a beginner, the shoe itself is less important. If you're going for heels, don't go for anything too high initially. And yes, the steel toes may not be a bad thing!!!

Have fun!

Your character shoes will do to start, and you can get your ballroom shoes in a few months. You'll eventually wind up getting different shoes for practice, standard and Latin in all likelihood.
