Take a computer or laptop, mini fridge and microwave for sure. a twin comforter set - but IMPORTANT - call the college and ask them if their beds are XL - it is common for dorm beds to be extra long and regular sheets won't fit. Not all schools are this way, tho. Also, bring just a few clothes (there is almost no storage) by a few i mean like 5 pairs of pants and 10 shirts, broom, mop, room cleaning stuff (dusting rag, etc.), bath products (soap, toilet paper, shampoo, a caddy to carry it in)clothes basket or hamper, clothes soap, notebook paper, pens, etc, and things to make it feel like home like pics of family, friends, and pets, posters of favorite band, etc. bring a backpack or messenger bag - that is very convenient. also a cordless phone. they will have a jack and provide free local service, but you have to bring your own phone and answering machine. also bring your health insurance card. usually you can stay on your parent's policy as long as you are in college. good luck! this will be a great time in your life.

Towels, Twin XL sheets, comforter, pillows/pillowcases, Twin XL mattress pad, "egg crate" mattress pad in twin XL, under-bed storage bags or bins, bulletin board, computer, printer, notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, lamps, laundry bag, nalgene water bottle, quarters for the washer/dryer, carry-all for shower/bath items, flip-flops to wear in the shower; clothes. If you're going to share a room, you and your future roommate should talk about the following before either purchases -- mini-fridge, microwave, tv, dvd player, etc. Some of the items, anyway!

Bring a cell phone. Do not bring a television; you will spend all your time watching it. Bring a computer, a MLA handbook, and a printer. Bring sheets, clothes, and laundry detergent.

You're set!

To add to the other answers, if you're going to share a room, try to talk with your roommate to agree on the colors of spreads and curtains. (Guys probably won't see any reason to have either, but girls will.)
