It really depends what you are looking for. If you want a lot of warm weather, sun, and nice beaches, I would go to west coast. If you want a lot of culture, history, and shopping then I would go to the east coast. (really just NYC). I am from NYC so I am a little biased. How about a little bit of both since you have two weeks. Spend one week in NYC and then take a 5 hour flight over to LA, do California and then Vegas. Have fun either way!

From what I've seen of foreign news and television, to see the America that best represents "America", I'd go to the East Coast. This is the oldest part of America and so you'll be able to visit all sorts of historical sites in New England and Washington DC. It will be warm and muggy here in the summer and cold and snowy in the winter. You'll see a lot of big cities here.
The West Coast is a little showy-er, more like Hollywood. You might also think of America when you think of this, but it's a younger part of the country and it shows it. The Northwest, where I'm from is popular for Asian travelers. This area is more country-with untouched land, good if you're into nature. It's pretty temperate everywhere, so whether it is summer or winter it will be warm in the south and cool in the north.
One other thing to consider is the difference in attitudes. Most people describe the difference as people on the west coast are outwardly friendly at first, but maybe meaner as you get to know them, people on the East Coast are very cold at first, but nicer as you get to know them. If that's all you take into consideration I'd suggest the West Coast is best for visiting, the East is best for living.

That is a hard one, both are great, both have different weather for this time of year. Decide whether you like it very cold and snowy or cool and sunny. That is the difference now between the east and west coast.

It also depends where you're coming from... The old parts of Boston, Phillie and NYC aren't that impressive if you're coming from an old European city. Spain, France & Italy have rural areas that geographically are not that different from California's foothills. Are you looking for familiarity or contrast?
Both East and West and Middle are fabulous. No matter which you choose, you can find some really fun things to do and cool places to go.

I prefer the west coast...the pace is easier and the people friendlier. Start in San Diego, go to San Franciso, Napa Valley, and then up to Seattle.
Of course, the time of year can impact the quality of the weather.
Have fun.

The East Coast has New York City. You wouldn't want to miss that.

Neither, because if you go to California you might get caught there when the San Andreas fault breaks off and a long chunk of California goes into the ocean. If you go to the East Coast then you might get caught in a building that gets hit by a plane. If I were you I would head for somewhere in the middle of the country like Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky. You're pretty safe there.
